Bringing a cancelled project back to life can be a challenge, but this Halloween, I decided to transform an old Codename Kingdoms concept into a DOOM II deathmatch map. Originally built for a slower-paced Xbox 360 melee action game, the level had to be completely reimagined to fit DOOM II’s fast, chaotic gameplay. The result is “The Enclave of Dis”, a retro-inspired map that combines the best of both worlds—modern concepts adapted for classic mechanics.
This project kicked off during a recent game jam, where I blocked out the map in honor of #Blocktober and set to work creating intense spaces for fast-paced multiplayer action. Adapting the map required rethinking areas for cover, flow, and strategic spawn points while staying true to DOOM’s iconic speed. The above video walks through these stages, from blockout to playtesting, showing the unique challenges of turning an unused idea into a playable arena.
With the Halloween season in mind, I gave the map a dark, fiery atmosphere, filled with ominous lighting, capturing a bit of DOOM’s classic horror vibe. I hope you enjoy watching the process unfold as much as I enjoyed building it!
